About this speaker
Tara Ruby is a United States Air Force veteran, military spouse, and co-owner of Pi Farms in Georgia, where she raises heritage livestock, grows nourishing food, and teaches others the value of homesteading skills. Over the past year, she has managed the farm on her own during her husband’s deployment, overseeing livestock breeding, seasonal planting, and food preservation. Through her dedication, she has filled both freezers and pantry shelves, entirely from the farm’s harvests and production. This hands-on experience reflects her commitment to resilience, sustainability, and self-sufficiency.
Her mission is to show that a meaningful and healing lifestyle is possible regardless of circumstance or location. While caring for her farm, Tara is completing her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition with a Holistic Concentration and is preparing for her next step, which is to pursue a Master of Public Health in Nutrition, Food Systems, and Health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. This program will equip her with the tools to transform communities by examining how food systems, culture, environment, and behavior impact health, and by applying that knowledge through nutrition policy, communication, and community interventions.
Tara’s path includes leadership as a former Vice President of Purdue Global’s Student Veterans of America chapter and as a founding member of the Georgia Farmer Veteran Coalition. She combines her leadership experience with her passion for sustainable farming, holistic nutrition, and community support. Her talk will inspire anyone interested in sustainable living, empowering military families, or learning how food systems can be used to improve health and well-being.
